2019, the 45th year of our foundation, was a year in which we continued to support civil society through our grant programs, expanded our support for our institutions, diversified our support for culture and arts, and maintained our efforts to create lasting impact through all these activities.
This year, we continued to support “education-themed” projects carried out by non-governmental organizations, as part of our focus on “women”, “youth” and “persons with disabilities”. With our invited grant projects, we established new cooperation. We continued to support our institutions and culture and arts events and to provide scholarships and grant awards to young people.
As the founder, we continued to support Sabancı University with their operating and investment expenses in 2019, just as we do every year.
In 2019, we renovated Adana - Hacı Ömer Sabancı Cultural Center, one of our institutions, thoroughly and we opened Sabancı Chamber Theater to service adding a new hall to the cultural center.
The Sakıp Sabancı Mardin City Museum and Dilek Sabancı Art Gallery, which were restored and opened by our Foundation in 2009, completed its tenth year in 2019 and the total number of visitors reached more than 900 thousand over ten years. In 2019, we opened a new photography exhibition titled “From Document to Fiction, From Workshop to Museum - Photographs on Mardin” and started to permanently exhibit a 1952 Chevrolet automobile donated to the Foundation in the entrance of the Museum, an automobile that witnessed a period in Mardin, that was important in the social life of the city and which was the only taxi of the period.
Within the framework of our Grant Programs, we offered our support to NGOs working to empower women, youth and persons with disabilities so that they can have equal opportunities and take an active role in society. Thanks to a total of 162 projects that we supported by the end of 2019, we touched the lives of 200 thousand people directly and more than 800 thousand indirectly. In October, we organized a huge meeting with all the institutions that we supported with our grants.
As of the end of 2019, we have reached a total of 190 Changemakers with our Turkey’s Changemakers Program, which aims to inspire society by promoting the stories and work of extraordinary people who contribute to social development in Turkey. The program’s 10th season was completed in 2019.
We hosted the 12th of Sabancı Foundation Philanthropy Seminar themed “Technologies for Life Without Barriers - Education”. We also allowed participants to experience innovative technologies in education that contribute to independent life without barriers.
We gave awards for the 3rd Short Film Competition that we hold with the motto of “Short Film, Long Impact”. The competition aims to raise awareness about social issues by making use of the creative perspective of cinema and its power of influence. Besides this new competition, we continued our activities in culture and arts with “State Theatres - Sabancı International Adana Theatre Festival”, “Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra”, “International Ankara Music Festival”, and “Excavations at the Ancient City of Metropolis”. The 7th Dilek Sabancı Theater Festival, the 6th Ayvalık Music Festival and the 7th Accessible Film Festival were among the culture and arts activities that we supported this year.
In 2019, we gave scholarships to nearly 1,500 students, almost 300 of which were new. With the former and current scholarship students of the Foundation, we held a scholarship holders meeting with broad participation, and we initiated a mentorship program between graduate scholars and current scholarship students. We gave awards to successful students and young artists just as we do every year.
I believe that we will continue our activities in 2020 with a sustainable and innovative approach and new collaborations, developing scalable models to address problems in our work areas with a vision of creating lasting impact. I would like to sincerely thank the members of our Board of Trustees, our donors, our professional team and all our other stakeholders who have lent us their support and encouragement.
Chairman, Board of Trustees
